B is for Baller

Not too long ago, I got a hankering to interview one of my readers.  My friend, probably most dedicated reader (besides my dad), and fellow blogger, bRob, was sweet enough to take the time to answer my questions.

Check out her blog here and the interview

here:

Name/Alias: bRob.  Sometimes people like to call me Helen of Troy, though, because of how great my face is and all.

Why did you decide to start blogging?
I think, truth be told, I was pretty lonely when I first started, and I wanted somewhere to start writing my melodrama, and I wanted to know someone [my pal InterWebs] was reading it. Just a little lame.

I got really into blogging last spring, though, and it's become a huge outlet. I feel like that should say, "creative outlet", but I'm not super creative, so mostly it's my running commentary on things I see, do, and live. I love it. Everyone should always know my opinion about everything.

Which character from Star Trek would you date?
Well this is tricky. Let's just say I stick to Star Trek: The Original Series. So then my really date-able options are limited to Kirk, Spock, the doctor guy, the ship-driving guy (He was Russian, right?), Geordi La Forge, and Scotty.

Scotty and the doctor are old, Kirk's too much of a mack daddy, and who even knows what that ship driving guy is named. So it's down to Spock and Geordi. Geordi is adorable, and we could bond over engineering, and he'd probably let me try on his weird visor/goggles thing, so Geordi.

Ooops. I just remembered that Geordi isn't actually in The Original Series. Ok, so maybe Spock.

Whose twitter (if it could be anyone dead or alive) would you most like to read?

Well, I live in the Bible Belt, so I have to say Jesus, right???

And after Jesus, probably Hamlet. He is so melodramatic and mad funny. Also, he's not real...

What is the difference between chicken nuggets and boneless chicken wings?

I feel like chicken nuggets come in shapes. Like dinosaurs or the plain old weird oval things. Whereas chicken wings are all...wing-y.

How do you decide how “personal” to make your blog? Isn’t it scary putting yourself out there?
By nature I've always been a very honest person. I don't mind sharing at all - in fact I tend to overshare.

It is important to remember that once you publish something, anyone can see it at any time. There have been times when I've wanted to post things, and I changed my mind when I realized those posts weren't good representations of what I believe or who I am.

As someone who can be quite the pessimist  at times, one of my greatest struggles is trying not to be too negative on my blog. I try never to post something that I would consider neither amusing nor encouraging nor interesting.  It can be tempting to rant and rave on my blog, but I remind myself that this isn't my diary. People read this, and they probably aren't going to continue if it is negative all the time. I especially try to exclude anything that is disparaging to the people in my life - my blog is not a tool for revenge or venting.
Along those lines, how do you balance the posts about your faith with the others? Do you ever worry about your non-Christian readers?

Sometimes I get anxious that I'm not posting enough about Jesus and my Christian readers will judge me for being less Jesus-y some weeks. And then when I'm posting a lot about my faith, I do have a fear that my nonChristian readers will find me boring.

However - trying to cater to either of those fears would be dishonest. If I feel led to post about my relationship with Christ or the movement of the Holy Spirit in my life, I try to, gladly. I never force a spiritual epiphany to share if there isn't one. But I don't try to hide the Lord's movement in my life for any reason.

An even greater fear is that when I just write daily things on my blog, I might say something that misrepresents Christ to others. There are things in my personal life that I do not feel dishonor God or are stumbling blocks for me, but because I know I have readers who don't believe in Christ and may be watching what I do and say closely, I  avoid posting anything that might be misconstrued or serve as a stumbling block for others - certain music, quotes, outfit pictures, etc. That is not to say I only post pictures with a little "I love Jesus" watermark in the corner, but rather that I check myself and the material I'm posting and seeing if it dishonors Him and discredits my witness. ( 1 PETER 2:12, 1 Cor 10:23)

Who would you want to play you in a biopic of your life?

Kristen Stewart. HAHAH not.

Jane Lynch.

If you were forced to get a tattoo, what would it be?
via reading theology

The trinity symbol, on my wrist.

But I cry when I get papercuts, so the odds of this happening are, like, zilch.

Biggest pet peeve:

Hah, I am the queen of pet peeves, so picking one is pretty challenging.
It really aggravates me when people only do their dirty dishes in a full sink. I think it's a nice gesture to do all of the dishes in the sink, and when you only do yours, it's like deliberately saying, "you are on your own." You know? Eh, maybe you don't. Maybe I'm the only picky one like that...

Worst date you’ve ever been on:

Sheesh, I've had way too many embarassing dates [not to be confused with too many dates. It's more that the bad to good date ratio is extremely skewed...].

Right after I told this guy I'd go on a date with him, I find out that he does a lot of things I'm really not "down" with, so I changed my mind. But the friend I went to for help has been in a relationship for forever and had never really been on a date date. We devised this super ridiculous plan where I would ask the guy if this date was a "friend thing" and he would be like, "Oh, nevermind."

But rather than saying "nevermind," he looked perturbed, and I tried to be like, "Well, I understand, we should cancel." But he didn't. He did not cancel this date. I spent an extremely awkward hour and a half making useless small talk. Also, he didn't even pay for my coffee

On the plus side, that is now my favorite coffee shop. They have great soy lattes.
It’s Friday at 8pm. What are you doing?

Probably getting my food on with a friend [a meal, or a run to the cupcake shoppe, or gettin' a cookout milkshake - I'm a lover of all things edible] or maybe going to a movie.

ummm let's get serious. I might actually be blogging at 8pm on a Friday night while watching a "Walking Dead" marathon. Sad? Maybe.
The best thing about having a blog is…

The massive amounts of fame and adoring comments I've received from my followers. Oh, wait, what is that? I don't get either of those? Shame on you followers. SHAME.

Actually, blogging has exposed me to a lot of cool stuff that people are doing all over. In fashion, in art, in science, in religion, even in my own field. Because I am constantly browsing the Webs for stuff to share, I come across a lot of articles and images that I would otherwise never have seen. I learn a lot while blogging.

The worst thing about having a blog is…

Trying new things and completely bombing. Occasionally I'll try to get my readers involved, or I'll try a new post idea out, and later I'll just feel ridiculous. Maybe it was a silly idea, maybe I only have like 3 readers...either way it can be a little humbling later when I see no one's commented and I have about 5 page views. 4 of which are from my grandma.

Celeb you would most want to be stranded on an island with:
a.       Aziz Ansari

A THOUSAND TIMES YES. Man he is so adorable. And funny. I love him in Parks and Rec. I want to pinch his cheeks and then have a giant purple-free snugglefest [you went to church camp, don't pretend you don't know what purple means...]

b.      Joel McHale (I had no idea who this was until I hulu'd about 3 episodes of Community today).
c.       Taylor Lautner (too young)
d.      Joshua Radin (too artsy)

Dream job if school/money was no object?
Stand-up comedian. If my weak sense of humor was also no object.

How do you do the Technicolor posts? Do you bookmark links for those posts as you go along or do you sit down and do it all at once?

They are really time consuming. I browse the web and bookmark interesting links, images, videos, and articles throughout the week. I have some staple blogs and sites I browse, but then I also like using stumbleupon.com [be careful, it's MEGA-addicting] and pinterest.com to find things I wouldn't otherwise come across. When I'm ready to write a post, I spend the next two to three hours sorting through all my bookmarks for my favorites and arranging them in the post. It's definitely worth the effort - I learn and see a lot, and I *think* my readers like it too. I think.

What are you addicted to right now?
I really enjoy the blog A Cup of Jo. The blogger, Joanna, posts interesting articles and beautiful images, links up other charming blogs and sites, and tells stories about her handsome husband and baby boy. I admire her creativity and enjoy her aesthetic. All of her posts are classy and tasteful, and she seems like a  sweet person who cares about her readers.

Also your funny and honest blog. Can't get enough =)

[some stuff that has changed my life]

Those of you who hang out with me IRL know I'm addicted to the blogosphere. I'm always blabbering on about the blogs that I follow, and talking about the authors like we're on first name basis.

When you follow someone's blog, (and I hate this term) religiously, you start to feel like you really are friends with that person.

One blog that I really love is Jamie The Very Worst Missionary's. It's tough to write blog posts about your faith without getting preachy, cheesy, or some combo of the two.  Somehow, Jamie manages to never do either.  She writes with a brutal honesty that is sometimes controversial, but always leaves me with a new perspective.  So when she posted You'd be Surprised. this week, I was blown away again.

Honestly, I'm going through some tough stuff right now in my own relationship with God. I don't really think that I have enough insight/clarity to write about it yet, but reading Jamie's post made me feel like I wasn't alone.  It gave me the opportunity to see past the hurt and guilt that fill up this spiritual rut that I'm in, and replace those feelings with forgiveness and grace. It allowed me to get a glimpse of the Jesus that the Bible talks about, the one who hung out with prostitutes and tax collectors, the one who taught about the prodigal son, and the one who offers redemption to his followers, no matter how much we screw up.

For the first time in a couple weeks, I saw the real Jesus. You should read the post. I promise it will be worth it.

"God can do much with very little.
He can do more with less.
He can do anything with nothing."

i'm just a girl who needs a little sun, a little rain, an open field to play

  • It was in the 70's during the day and 50's at night, which made me really, really ready for fall.
  • After telling my dad "I'm gonna laugh when you fall out of your chair", I fell out of mine and landed on the arm I had fallen on earlier that day. Payback is a you-know-what.
  • We hiked 12 miles on Tuesday. Yeah, that's right, 12. One thing I learned is that after 8 miles or so, you go into a kind of trance (like the opposite of runner's high), where you don't care if you ever get out of the woods, you just keep plodding along hopelessly, wishing for something to eat that isn't a Nature's Valley bar.
  • There were over a hundred spots it the campground, not exaggerating, and the yuppie couple with two toddlers picked the site right next to us. At least the kids were cute. It sort of made up for the yelling of "DADDY! CAN WE HAVE JELLYBEANS?!?!?!" all evening.
  • Deer chili + bratwurst for dinner. Do I eat like a man or what?

facebook, a love/hate relationship

Since I am going camping tomorrow and will be spending a few days away from technology, I got on Blogger to write a post to you, my sweet readers.  This happened 2 hours ago.  What happened in the two hours between me clicking "New Post" and actually typing out this pathetic paragraph?

Facebook.

I got on to respond to ONE MESSAGE.  I don't even like being on facebook, but it sucks you in and won't let you log off.  So why do I still have one? Let's ponder the pro's and con's.

Pro
I can creep on that cutie in my problem session. Sure, it took me 2 hours to sort through every guy named "Mark" at NCSU, and it turns out he has a girlfriend, but now I can look through 2,000 pics of his trip to Uganda last summer!
(disclaimer: this is not referring to a specific situation, but is an exaggerated example to make a point. If your name is Mark and you went to Uganda last summer, that is just a freakish coincidence and I promise I'm not stalking you)

Con
Status updates from people that I went to middle school with.  Yeah, we were partners on a science project in 7th grade, but I don't really care about how sweet your smoochy-woochy boyfriend is now.

Pro
Shamelessly plugging my blog in my status updates. Don't judge.

    Con
People tagging HORRIBLE pictures of you.  Nobody wants to see pics of me before I discovered makeup/straightening irons. Or what I look like by day 3 of a church retreat.  Or me doing any sort of athletic activity.

Pro
Posting hilarious youtube videos that I think a friend would like.
Like this:

Con
Personalized advertising. "College Student Getaway" ads are alright, but when I get things like "are you a 22 year old who drives a civic and needs a job?", I start feeling a little creeped out.

Pro
Event invite.  Soooo much easier than looking up email addresses for everyone I know.

Con
It's ability to suck you in! Why am I looking at pictures of my little sister's friend from high school's birthday party? I don't know but it sure is fun.

What do you think people? Is it just me?

P.S. I want to interview one of my readers (YOU) for my blog! Whoever posts the most enthusiastic comment (or whoever comments at all) can get interviewed! Comment and become famous!

in your love

When I am alone
When I've thrown off the weight of this crazy stone
When I've lost all care for the things I own
That's when I miss you, that's when I miss you, that's when I miss you
You who are my home
You who are my home
And here is what I know now
Here is what I know now
Goes like this
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, my salvation lies
In your love, in your love, in your love

true confession

A few of you are going to react angrily to this, but I miss my long hair.

I know that it was ridiculously long and looked ratty and gross. However, that was before the days of Tony, my amazing hair stylist.  I'm convinced that Tony could help me achieve a long hair look that would rival the Kardashians... or at least not get split-endy.

I didn't know all the amazing things I could do with long hair...

Or standing near big fans and having my hair blow around...

I'm feeling jealous just looking at these pics. sighhhhh.

What do you think? Long, gorgeous hair or a life of being enslaved to bobby pins?

What I'm lovin

I'm famous again! One of my best friends and college roomie Jasmine is an awesome photographer, so we went downtown and tried to be trendy.  The result is on her blog, go check it out.

Anyhooo, I've gotten sick of all my music and have been looking for new.

Here is what I'm listening to right now.  In case you are bored. Or are looking for something new.

Gorgeous- Kanye West
I know, I know. Kanye is a jerk. I've got principles, but I'm pretty good at throwing them out the window when I like a song.

Drunken Lullabies- Flogging Molly
They're Irish... What did you expect?

The Dog Days Are Over- Florence and the Machine
"Leave all your love and your longing behind you
Can't carry it with you if you want to survive"

Black Irish- The Devil Makes Three
Catchy-est song ever.

 Electric Feel- MGMT
This vid is really weird. Not the cool way, like Lady Gaga's early days, but more like "I'm going to dress up like a forest nymph and dance with some girls who are wearing confetti" way.  I love the song anyway...
ooooh girl, shock me like an electric eel...

Lil Wayne- How to Love
Lil' Wayne writes a song about treating a woman with respect? Who saw that coming?

P.S. Every time they play "Rolling in the Deep" on the radio, a cuddly kitten dies. True story.

P.P.S. A Lil' Wayne and Kanye West song in one playlist...how hip-hop am I?

Oldies

Some pitchas of a hiking excursion Jas and I took at Falls of Neuse State Park.  You can tell that they were taken many moons ago by the snow on the ground and my ridiculously long hair.  Both of those are gone now.

If anyone is in the Winston-y area and likes camping/backpacking/hiking/birdwatching/ANYTHING, you should hit me up.

jk about the bird watching though.

Unless I get really desperate.

Checkin in from Camel City

So I've been back in my hometown for about a week now, and surprisingly it's been kind of awesome.  Ok, sitting around the house hasn't (I am way too type A for summertime), but being back in "The Dash" has been pretty sweet.

Here are some of the things I'm loving about being here right now:

1. Trees! Grass! Parks! Pretty fences in the front yard! Just overall, it is way prettier than Raleighwood.  Even my dentist office is in a cute renovated house.
Ice cream and coffee at Cassanova's with Chiss

Summer + rocking chairs + windchimes = relaxation

First coffee in 2 weeks!

2. People in pickup trucks, everywhere. I just spend the last 4 years at an ag school, so I thought I was down with redneck, but apparently, I wasn't prepared for moving back to western Forsyth County.

3. Being stuck behind someone going 25 in a 45.  Annoying? yes.  But after driving the paved death trap known as the beltline, it's kinda endearing.   Added bonus: people getting over so that you can merge onto the highway.

4. Pool time with LMS.  'Nuff said.

5. Exploring the city as an adult.  It's a little weird going to a brewery in my hometown. I still feel like I should have my mom drop me off in the minivan.

6. Cutesy town things to do.  There's a seafood festival this weekend, movies at the park, and music downtown every weekend.  I almost feel like I'm in Stars Hollow.

D and I hiking by the parkway
7. Hiking with my dad. I didn't really get my Jane Goodall on much in college because of homework, jobs, and lack of nature, so it's good to be back near the mountains.

8. Running into people you knew in high school.  The jury is still out on whether this is a good or bad thing.

Anyone else from Camel City? What do you love about it?

guess what...

I'm famous!

I won a contest over on this here blog ,

so my good friend b-robs wrote a post about how amazing I am!

Of course, you already knew that, but check it out anyway right here.

p.s. you should read the rest of her blog too. she's entertaining, clever, and laugh-out-loud funny. for real.

Also, I promise that I have blogs of real substance planned, and by "real substance" I mean they have things like pictures and thoughts put together in bullet paragraph form.  I know all 6 of you are probably doing real life things and not checking my blog full of anticipation, so I promise they will come soon.

smooches,

Thoughts

I'm not normally into "Single Power" type stuff (or poetry for that matter), but this woman has a unique way of addressing relationship issues.  I think any woman could see parts of herself in this poem.  If you're a boy... you might wanna skip the video and wait for my next post. :)

8.05.2011

humble pie

my blog list is out of control.

yesterday I went through and deleted some of the blogs and twitter... twitters... (what is the correct plural of twitter?) and the list is still long.

anyway

I was catching up on my pastor's twitter (the number 10 way that you know you go to a trendy mega-church, b-rob) and he had tweeted this:

@MikeatHope

Dear God, please remove this anger in my heart, so that I don't have to do any work in the process, or do any of that annoying "forgiving" junk that You are always talking about...

But then last night I pictured the Son of God kneeling on the dirt floor, washing the feet of the man who followed Him for years, who professed to be his friend, and who would turn Him in to the Jews to be killed.

And I felt...ashamed.  It sucked.

I've been walking around, spitting fire at this person like it was my job, and Jesus was down there in the dirt, washing His enemy's feet.
I'd like to say that I've totally let it go, but that would be lying to y'all. I know this though, I'm gonna be down on the ground with my Savior, washing those feet until I do.

p.s. i'm sorry about the formatting of this post. blogger likes to hate sometimes.

A rose by any other name...

Some of you may have heard that Campus Crusade for Christ has recently changed their name to Cru.  If you are anything like me, you are probs thinking something like "that's cool... now aren't there bigger things going on in the world? sex trafficking? poverty? the season finale of the bachlorette?"

And I work for this company.

While you may think that there are better things to spend your time thinking about, there has been some interesting backlash to the removal of the word "Christ" from the name.

If you are interested in reading the press release about the name change here it is.

Most publicly, Glenn Beck mocked the change, calling it "cowardly".

I don't want to argue the point on my blog.  I would never work for a Christian organization that I didn't feel was Christ focused and biblically based.  However, I realize that a lot of y'all who read my blog know that I am affiliated with Cru (and some of you probably support me), so I wanted to say, just real quick, that

Campus Crusade for Christ has not wavered in their dedication to the gospel, or lost sight of the reason behind the ministry (Jesus Christ).

For further thoughts, you could read Should You Support Campus Crusade Staff Now That the Name Is Changing?

Gettin' dunked

Here's a photo recap of my baptism, since the last post was so wordy...
This woman is such an example to me of what living for Christ should look like. So honored that she got to baptize me.

I accidentally replied "I do" to the question about Christ being my savior. I'm pretty sure that response is for a different life changing celebration...

Becca love.

My sis looking cute after a day at the beach & me looking like a "wet rat"

Daddy/Daughter love.

Some of my high school girls--- congrats to Alexa who also got baptized. I'm so proud of all these girls.

I'm so lucky that I got to celebrate this public declaration of my salvation with the people I love.
Thank you so much to everyone who came and made this day special for Alexa and I.
